Structural engineering services – structural drawings and calculations

CC Metall AB helps private individuals, property owners, housing associations, construction companies, architects and workshops with structural drawings, structural calculations and dimensioning of load-bearing structures.

We can assist with, for example, openings in load-bearing walls, beams, columns, floor structures, roofs, foundations, extensions, roof lifts, stairs, balconies and structures in steel, timber and concrete.

CC Metall AB is based in Gränna and works digitally with projects throughout Sweden and the rest of Europe.

When formal dimensioning, review or signing is required, the responsible structural engineer and the scope of the assignment are stated in the quotation.

When is a structural engineer needed?

A structural engineer may be needed when a building is altered in a way that affects load-bearing elements, or when a new structure needs to be dimensioned.

Common examples include:

• opening or alteration in a load-bearing wall

• dimensioning of beams and columns

• extension, additional storey or roof lift

• new or reinforced floor structure

• altered roof structure

• foundations

• stairs, balconies and railings

• steel frames and industrial structures

• new loads on existing buildings

The municipality, certified control manager or building contractor may also require structural documents before construction work is allowed to begin.

Structural calculations

Structural calculations are used to verify that the structure can withstand the relevant loads and has sufficient load-bearing capacity and stability.

The calculations may include, for example:

• self-weight and imposed load

• snow and wind load

• bending, shear and compression

• buckling and stability

• deflection

• support reactions

• fixings and connections

• load transfer to the foundation

Which calculations are needed depends on the material, size, location and use of the structure.

Structural drawings

Structural drawings show how load-bearing elements should be dimensioned, positioned and connected.

Depending on the project, the documentation may include:

• foundation and structural frame plans

• beam and column plans

• floor and roof plans

• steel or timber structural drawings

• reinforcement drawings

• sections and detail drawings

• supports and fixings

• materials and dimensions

• installation principles

The exact documents included are specified in the quotation.

Opening in a load-bearing wall

When an opening is to be made in a load-bearing wall, the load above the opening must be transferred safely.

Such an assignment may include dimensioning and drawing of:

• steel or timber beam

• columns

• supports

• fixings

• load transfer to the underlying structure

The work should not begin before the function of the wall and the new structural support have been investigated.

Extension, roof lift and new storey

For extensions and additional storeys, both new and existing structures need to be checked.

This may involve:

• foundations

• load-bearing walls

• floor structures

• beams and columns

• roof structure

• stabilisation

• connection between new and existing parts

• load transfer down to the foundation

For a roof lift or a new storey, it is therefore normally not sufficient to dimension only the new roof structure.

Structures in steel, timber and concrete

We can assist with structural documentation for, among other things:

• glulam beams and timber columns

• timber floor structures and roofs

• slabs, foundations and edge beams

• fixings and connections

• reinforcement of existing structures

More advanced projects may require specialist expertise or external consultants.

The difference between building permit drawings and structural drawings

Building permit drawings mainly show the building’s location, design, floor plan and external alterations.

Structural drawings show how load-bearing elements are to be dimensioned and executed.

A building permit drawing may, for example, show that an opening is to be made in a wall. The structural documentation shows which beam, supports and any columns are required.

How the process works

1. You send us the documentation

Send drawings, photographs, measurements and a description of what is to be built or altered.

2. We review the project

We assess which structures are affected and whether additional measurements, a site visit or investigations are needed.

3. You receive a quotation

The quotation states which calculations and drawings are included, as well as price, delivery time, responsibility and limitations.

4. Calculations and drawings are prepared

The structure is dimensioned and presented in the agreed documents.

5. The documents are delivered

The documentation is delivered digitally, normally as PDF. DWG may be included when stated in the quotation.

Documentation we need

For an initial assessment, we normally need:

• address or property designation

• a description of the proposed work

• building permit or architectural drawings

• existing structural drawings, if available

• photographs and measurements

• information about materials and the building’s construction

• dimensions of openings and spans

• requirements from the municipality or certified control manager

• requested delivery date

If existing documents are missing, parts of the building may need to be measured or opened up for inspection.

What is not automatically included?

The following items are included only if stated in the quotation:

• building permit and architectural drawings

• geotechnical investigation

• fire safety and energy design

• plumbing, electrical and ventilation design

• certified control manager

• authority fees and submission

• site visits

• investigation of hidden structures

• manufacturing drawings

• CE marking

• material testing

• external specialist or third-party review

Existing and hidden structures

For alterations, the calculations are based on available drawings, measurements and information about the building.

Hidden parts may differ from older drawings or assumed conditions. Walls, floors or roofs may therefore need to be opened up before final dimensioning can be carried out.

Projects outside Sweden

CC Metall AB also works with projects in other European countries.

Before work begins, it must be clarified which regulations, loads and documentation or qualification requirements apply. A local structural engineer or local signing may be required in some countries.

Do I need a structural engineer to remove a wall?

If the wall is load-bearing or stabilising, it normally needs to be investigated before it is altered or removed.

How do I know if the wall is load-bearing?

An initial assessment can be made based on drawings and the building’s construction. A reliable assessment may require a site visit or opening up the structure.

Can you dimension a steel beam?

Yes. The calculation requires, among other things, information about span, loads, supports and the existing structure.

Do you produce structural drawings for extensions?

Yes. The documentation can include foundations, walls, floor structures, beams, columns, roofs and connections to the existing building.

Can the work be carried out remotely?

Yes. Many assignments can be carried out digitally when clear drawings, photographs and verified measurements are available.

Can you guarantee that the municipality will approve the documents?

No. The municipality is responsible for its review and decision. CC Metall AB is responsible for the delivery that has been agreed.
